In an interview with NPR about his new book, The Hidden Brain, science writer Shankar Vedantam explains that humans have two modes, "pilot" and "autopilot," between which we constantly switch. He describes a common problem when "we [switch] without our awareness, and the autopilot ends up flying the plane, when we should be flying the plane," and the implications it has on our judgments, including how we react to race.
