Trish Williams and Michael Kirst report on key findings from their study of California middle schools in this excellent, detailed article.  They found that, while reconfiguring grades served in a building has little impact on student achievement, a focus on year-end targets aligned to state assessments, and evaluating teachers on their success at getting students to reach these targets, figured prominently among practices in effective middle schools.
