Elementary school students in Franklin Lakes, New Jersey, are learning that slowing down is the way to get ahead. Schools here have been using a program modeled on the national math system of Singapore, a country whose students earn high marks each year on international math exams. Labeled "Singapore math," this program differs from others in that it stresses the importance spending ample time on each concept, and pairs each lesson with a variety of hands-on and visual aids. The goal is to increase students' confidence in math by giving them a strong foundation in the basics.
