How I Spent My Summer Vacation - it's a typical essay assignment for children as they return to school in the fall. The contents of the essay can vary significantly from student to student, especially at different economic levels, with some attending summer camps and visiting museums, and others left sitting at home. Now new research from the RAND Corporation has found that how kids spend their summer break can affect how well they retain what they learned the year before. NBC News reports on this study, and offers a video depicting the significant impact this learning loss, or "summer slide" can have on lower-income students.
